Emidio Pepe 1932 - 2026
Michele Boscia
Emidio Pepe passed away in his sleep earlier this week, the day after his 94th birthday. Emidio was a towering figure in Italian viticulture; his eponymous estate was one of two that have dominated fine wine-making in his home region, the Abruzzo, for decades. Those who have drunk them know that the red wines he made from the Montepulciano grape were amongst the best anywhere, not just in Italy; in my opinion the whites, made from Trebbiano Abruzzese, are just as good. Emidio blazed a trail for his region, and then ensured a successful wine-making transition from him to his daughter, and then to his granddaughter Chiara. We will remember Emidio’s unfailing warmth at his estate, and we join wine-lovers all over the world in sending our warmest wishes to his family.
