International Women's Week Feature
Michele Boscia
In honor of International Women’s Day this month, we’ve been highlighting wines from the donnas who inspire us! Women winemakers and proprietors from Italy are a large part of our book, and we wanted to bring them your attention this week! We recently did a tasting menu with our partners at A16 Rockridge featuring the following wines:
Sorelle Bronca • The Bronca sisters oversee their family winery in the steep hillside vineyards of Conegliano-Valdobbiadene, Veneto (A Unesco World Heritage Site). Be sure to enjoy appertivi with a glass of their lively Prosecco Superiore Brut.
Laura de Vito • Laura grew up in a grape-growing and winemaking family and now produces of Fiano di Avellino in her home village of Lapio, Campania. Her Fiano di Avellino 'Elle' has flavors of linden, pear, hazelnut, mint, and wild herbs and proves that Fiano is truly one the best white-wine varieties of Italy. This wine is the perfect accompaniment to the Spring vegetables soon to grace our menu.
Antonella Lombardo • Antonella formerly practiced law in Milan before finding her passion in winemaking - she returned to her home in Bianco, Calabria on the Ionian coast to pursue her dream, producing excellent wines that speak to place. Pair the vibrant, mouthwatering Nerello Mascalese Rosato ‘Chara’ with the any of the seafood dishes or pizzas.
Giovanna Chessa • Giovanna displays her elegant, expressive winemaking style at her family winery in Sassari, Sardegna, producing only indigenous varieties. We are delighted to pour the Cagnulari, Isola dei Nuraghi by the glass - dark in color, both flavorful and fresh, combining wild herb aromas so common in Mediterranean wines. With its richness and vibrant acidity, this wine pairs beautifully with our tomato-based pizzas as well as the roasted chicken and ribeye.
Sirene • Elisa Carta, a trained sommelier and olive oil taster, and a passionate herbalist, continues to create fantastic and delicate liqueurs, bitters, and aperitif wines in Lake Garda near Verona. A16 will be featuring the Liquori delle Sirene, made of 23 botanicals, including olive and lemon tree leaves, linden and acacia flowers, wild rose berries, sweet and bitter orange, absinthe, gentian and ginger - Do not miss this Sirene Spritz this weekend!
