Summer Wine Starter Pack
Michele Boscia
We fully agree with Mr. Asimov that the ColleStefano Verdicchio should be part of any aspiring wine lover's starter pack. It's a wine that has led many of us to the Marche and to Italy as a whole—a timeless and perennial white that keeps us coming back for more with every vintage.
It's a testament to the tremendous skill of winemaker Fabio Marchionni, who makes less than four thousand cases of this Verdicchio annually. The romance isn't the point, though; this wine is racy, vivid, and excellent with all kinds of seafood dishes, delivering incredible quality for the dollar.
It is fermented and matured entirely in stainless steel (no oak) and does not undergo malolactic fermentation. Use it like you might use a Sauvignon Blanc, because Verdicchio has some of the same herbal aroma and flavor as Sauvignon. It is a great aperitif, too, with olives and toasted almonds.
