Oliver McCrum Wines has been importing small production Italian wine and distributing to fine retail and restaurant establishes throughout California since 1994. Over time, our portfolio of producers has steadily grown to over 45 producers from 15 different regions of Italy. We look for typical Italian wines with clarity and freshness, usually made from indigenous Italian grape varieties using clean, transparent winemaking techniques and no obvious use of oak.

New Winery: Cantalupo

Michele Boscia

We are excited to add the Cantalupo wines to our portfolio this year. I just completed the new web page for Cantalupo on our site with some notes and tech details for the wines we have in stock. Look for the rosato 'Il Mimo' to arrive in June.

I was extremely pleased with the line-up we tasted at Vinitaly this year. All the wines showed a clear mineral character and a bright mouthwatering acidity. The wines are quite delicate and not at all over-ripe which really allows the mineral character to show alongside the fruit. The climate in Ghemme as in the other areas of Northern Piedmont is rainier and cooler than those of the Barolo and Barbaresco areas to the south, which allows the grapes to enjoy a long growing season without becoming over-ripe. This leads to wines with great depth of flavor and alcohol levels in the moderate range. The wines are all aged for extended periods in very large slavonian oak casks and then further extended aging takes place in their underground bottle cellar. The winery releases their wines quite a bit later than most other wineries producing important red wines these days so we are able to drink wines with a few extra years of age without aging them ourselves. These are really special wines and all for a bargain price considering the complexity of flavor and level of quality they offer.
